What Is Upper Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)?

Upper blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that targets the upper eyelids to restore a brighter, more lively appearance to the eyes. Before receiving a Boulder upper blepharoplasty, our patients have experienced their eyes communicate so much within the face. Any drooping, sagging, or puffiness can have an impact on the overall presentation of emotion or alertness. The changes to the eyelids that come with age, stress, and other factors can compromise the beauty of the face.

An upper blepharoplasty can rejuvenate the entire facial aesthetic and restore youthfulness by surgically addressing the following issues:

  • Degeneration of skin elasticity around the eyes
  • Sagging, bulging, stretched, or excess skin on the eyelids
  • Changes to pigmentation
  • Puffy eyelids or redistribution of fat
  • Eyelid asymmetry or damage

Why Undergo Eyelid Surgery?

Loose or sagging skin or fat on the eyelids can not only contribute to a tired look on the face, but it can also make the patient look older than they may feel inside, which can have an impact on their self-confidence. Also, in some cases, drooping or swollen eyelids can obstruct vision and cause physical discomfort.

Because of the connections between the eyebrows and the upper and lower eyes, upper blepharoplasty is sometimes recommended to be combined with other cosmetic or reconstructive surgeries that target the area overall.

When the lower eyelids are drooping or the eyebrows are sagging, there may be indications for surgical procedures to treat these conditions, such as a brow lift or lower blepharoplasty.

  • A brow lift can raise the skin above the eye that may be putting pressure on the eyelids and pushing them downward
  • Lower blepharoplasty can surgically correct under-eye bags and drooping of the lower eyelids
  • Ptosis repair is used to tighten the weakened muscle in the upper lid that allows the eyelid to droop

Ultimately, Dr. Kyle Cox is committed to producing a treatment plan with your optimal health and desired aesthetics in mind. She will make sure that you feel rejuvenated and ready for the world again after your upper blepharoplasty in Boulder, CO.

How Do I Know If an Eyelid Lift Is for Me?

Do you notice your eyelids drooping, or looking extra tired or puffy? Is your eyelid skin covering your eyelashes or impacting your peripheral vision? Are you experiencing discomfort? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, an eyelid lift may be the right procedure for you.

Dr. Cox gives every patient a thorough consultation to evaluate whether they are a good candidate for upper blepharoplasty surgery in Boulder and whether there may be other complementary procedures to achieve the most natural, beautiful, youthful results.

There are some existing health concerns that may have contraindications and should be considered when deciding whether to undergo this surgery. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid disease
  • Severe dry eye
  • Smoking (may reduce the body’s ability to heal post-surgery)

You will also want to let Dr. Cox know about any medications or herbal supplements that you take, because some may increase bleeding and affect your healing time.

What Can I Expect During the Procedure?

Dr. Cox will customize each procedure to match your particular treatment plan. Depending on your preference, the surgery can be performed with a combination of local anesthesia and IV or oral sedation tailored to your needs. General anesthesia may be used in some cases. To minimize scarring, the surgery is performed with a hidden incision in the crease line of the eyelid. By preserving the existing fat in the eye area and using injectable fillers, Dr. Cox produces a natural, beautiful, youthful result. No matter your goals, Dr. Cox will ensure exceptional care and exemplary results with a focus on high quality service.

What Is the Recovery Process Like?

It is important to allow your body time to rest for a full recovery to take place. Although recovery from an eyelid lift is mild, you can expect visible bruising, swelling, mild tenderness, and dry eye for the first two weeks of recovery. Typically, the stitches will be removed after 5-7 days. Patients must refrain from airline travel and exercise, including sex, for the first two weeks. The recovery time may vary, depending on the patient, so it is recommended to follow the post-operative instructions for a smooth process. Once cleared by your physician, you are free to resume your normal day-to-day activities.

What Are the Cosmetic and Safety Concerns?

Scarring: Anytime an incision is made in tissue, there will be a scar. The question is how visible it will be. Luckily, eyelid skin is very delicate and almost always heals inconspicuously. However, there are certain things that can increase the risk of scarring such as smoking, noncompliance with medications or instructions, and personal predisposal to scarring.

Wide-eyed Appearance: Dr. Cox customizes the aesthetics for each patient, based on anatomy. There is no cookie-cutter approach. However, some systemic morbidities, such as thyroid disease, can affect the healing process and must be discussed pre-operatively.

Inability to Close the Eyes: This risk is directly related to aggressive skin resection and recognition of appropriate candidates. Dr. Cox customizes each blepharoplasty based on the patient's anatomy and goals, thus preventing the possibility of resecting too much of the eyelid skin during surgery that would lead to an inability to close the eyes.

Dry Eyes: If the patient has a pre-existing condition of dry eye, it may worsen or stay the same. Generally, it is a little worse while healing, especially during the first few weeks due to more air access to the surface of the eyes. Fortunately, this subsides and returns back to normal after the first few weeks of recovery. Artificial tears are recommended during healing.
